Over this summer I spent some time painting still lifes both indoors and outdoors. For me, capturing the effect of light outdoors was a particular challenge in my still life painting. Typically when working indoors, an artist has time to observe the still life subject in a controlled (and air-conditioned!) setting. Outdoors, however, the light changes quickly, and the temperatures can get very warm. This dynamic environment forced me to paint more directly, resulting in more-expressive work.
