This past March I was fortunate enough to take Ned Mueller’s workshop at the Scottsdale Artists’ School.   My primary goal in the workshop was to get a better grasp on color.  Following the workshop I read Richard Schmid’s book Alla Prima 2.  I took Schmid’s advice and made color studies using foam board and a pallet knife.  This was a tedious project, but well worth it. I now have them as a resource online and in the studio.

These color studies use a predominant color mixed with the variety of colors on my basic palette.  Each new color is then tinted with white to create it’s value range. I highly recommend this exercise!
